SGLT2 Inhibitors
SGLT2 Inhibitors work by reducing the amount of glucose that the kidneys absorb so that it can be flushed out in the urine. Hence, it helps in decreasing the amount of glucose in the blood.
SGLT2 inhibitors are sold under three generic names: Dapagliflozin, Canagliflozin and Empagliflozin. They should be taken once a day.
The effectiveness of SGLT2 inhibitors depends largely on the kidney function of the patient. While on this medication, the urine of diabetes patients will test positive for glucose. This can lead to risk of urinary tract infection and genital infections.
SGLT2 inhibitors can also cause a severe condition known as ketoacidosis where excess ketones or blood acids are made by the body. This condition can lead to breathlessness, dizziness, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, confusion, and sudden fatigue or tireness. It requires close medical supervision or hospitalization.
