It is unfortunate to know that the number of people suffering from diabetes each year is constantly increasing. If left untreated, diabetes could lead to life threatening crisis. Even if emergency situations can be avoided, poorly controlled diabetes could damage your nerves and blood vessels and this can lead to devastating consequences.

Metabolic Emergencies

Untreated diabetes could lead to fatal consequences. Ketoacidosis, a short-term complication of diabetes, is a progressing condition. Low level of insulin could result to the accumulation of sugar in your blood. The body will normally break down fats to be used for fuel and results in the buildup of byproducts, also known as the ketones. Some of the classic signs and symptoms of Ketoacidosis are breathing that will sound like sighs, nausea, confusion, vomiting, dehydration and lightheadedness.

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, or the HHS, is another dangerous condition that results due to untreated diabetes. Some of the most prominent signs and symptoms are leg cramps, weakness, as well as visual problems. HHS is more common among older adults who have Type 2 Diabetes. The condition will normally develop as a result of high level of blood sugar. Both the Ketoacidosis and HHS are considered life threatening medical emergencies.
