Sugar Substitutes: Date Sugar

Unlike the coconut sugar and maple syrup which require a boiling process in its making, date sugar is extracted from the fruit itself by drying and grounding to fine grains. The sugar is essentially its powdered fruit and hence retains most of its fiber and nutrients like vitamin B6, iron and magnesium. However, its uses are limited as it is not easily dissolved in hot beverages like coffee and tea. Date sugar is more commonly used as a substitute for brown sugar in baking recipes.

Sugar Substitutes: Molasses

A by-product of the white-sugar-refining process, molasses retains the essential nutrients and vitamins that is lost when sugar cane is refined. It is touted to be the most nutrient-rich natural sweetener which contains relatively high amount of iron, calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, vitamin Bs and selenium. Although nutrient rich, 1 serving of molasses contains 47 calories, roughly the same as sugar itself. Molasses is available in numerous grades, of which Blackstrap molasses is considered as the healthiest choice. 1-2 tablespoon of blackstrap daily has effects on improving hair health, bowel movement, bone health and skin health.
