Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) or brown fat is a type of fat that mammals and humans have apart from the more commonly known yellow or white fat. Newly born human beings and hibernating mammals are rich in brown fat whose main function is to emit body heat. Brown fat gets its dark red color due to its abundance of iron. It is also richer in capillaries than white fat due to it higher oxygen use.
Brown fat is usually located on the shoulders, upper spine and back and is more common among younger people and the obese. It increases in content during the winters and reduces in warmer climates.
