Diabetes Herbs: Bitter Melon


Other than being a popular culinary vegetable, it is also a medicinal vegetable taken for various health benefits in the asian culture. With respect to diabetes, bitter melon contains three main acting agents, Vicine, Polypeptide-P and Charantin. These insulin-like compounds aids metabolism of sugar and regulation of blood sugar levels, thereby reducing the severity of diabetes.

Tip: Bitter melon can be taken as a vegetable, juice, tea or supplement. However, be aware that overconsumption of bitter melon may lower blood sugar level to unhealthy levels and result in side effects like giddiness, shakiness or digestive problems. It is advisable to get a recommended dosage by a doctor.
