In general, sleep apnea disappears when one sleeps well and normally. To encourage better sleep, it is vital to keep to regular sleeping hours and refrain from caffeine-based beverages in the evening.
More specific ways in which sleep apnea may be prevented include:
• losing weight: This reduces the pressure on the neck due to body weight and can keep one's throat open.
• reducing an intake of alcohol and drugs: Sedatives such as alcohol and certain drugs relax the tongue and force it to lay back, hindering the air passage.
• sleeping on one's side: prevents the tongue from falling back and hindering the air passage.
• propping one's head up on the pillow or raising the entire body waist up with a cervical pillow or foam wedge: prevents the tongue from falling back and hindering the air passage.
