Sleep Apnea Prevention

In general, sleep apnea disappears when one sleeps well and normally. To encourage better sleep, it is vital to keep to regular sleeping hours and refrain from caffeine-based beverages in the evening.

More specific ways in which sleep apnea may be prevented include:

losing weight: This reduces the pressure on the neck due to body weight and can keep one's throat open.
reducing an intake of alcohol and drugs: Sedatives such as alcohol and certain drugs relax the tongue and force it to lay back, hindering the air passage.
sleeping on one's side: prevents the tongue from falling back and hindering the air passage.
propping one's head up on the pillow or raising the entire body waist up with a cervical pillow or foam wedge: prevents the tongue from falling back and hindering the air passage.
