A common sleep disorder, sleep apnea is typified by having one or several breaks in breathing or shallow breathing in sleep. These pauses in breathing can extend from just a few seconds to a few minutes and they can occur 30 times or more in each hour. Once this pause ends, normal breathing resumes, often with a loud choking sound or a snort.
The symptoms of sleep apnea include:
• Physical exhaustion and sleep during the day
• Sleeplessness
• Lack of attention and concentration
• Problems with memory
• Depression and mood swings
• Anxiety
• Headaches during the day, especially the mornings
• Irritability
• Difficulty in concluding duties at work
