Alcohol Consumption Dos and Don'ts

Believe it or not but there are occasions when diabetics can drink safely, particularly when the subsequent recommendations are followed:

• What is for dinner? Have food with your alcoholic drink
• Slow down and savour your drink.
• You are already sweet enough! Avoid mixed drinks and sweet wines
• Be a Mixer! Add water, club soda, or pop to liquor.

Always know your limit; no more than two drinks of alcohol in one-day for men, and one drink for woman. Checking in with your doctor to see if any level drinking alcohol is safe for you is also wise. If you do choose to drink, do so only on occasion and when your diabetes and blood sugar level are well-controlled. Finally wearing medical alert jewelry is an excellent accessory for your night on the town.Alcohol can negatively affect the beneficial effects of oral diabetes medications or insulin.
