Pregnant women can experience a range of complications if they do not monitor their diabetes and manage it well. In order not to damage the fetus, women suffering from Type 1 or 2 or gestational diabetes should reach their target glucose levels before they conceive.
If a pregnant woman has high blood glucose, the fetus can put on excessive weight, leading to problems at birth and trauma to the baby and mother. A sudden fall in blood glucose for the baby after birth is also possible. Besides, fetuses are at a high risk of being diabetic in future, due to their prolonged exposure to high blood glucose in the womb.
Preventative steps
Eating healthy food, such as fish, chicken and pulses, brown rice and whole grain pasta can prevent this condition. Food should be grilled, not fried. Exercising, controlling body weight and controlling blood sugar levels can also prevent diabetes in pregnancy.
