Foods that are high in fat can cause heartburn. Now when you think high in fat you may think that only applies to fried and fast food, but you would be wrong. High-fat foods can be healthy too. Avocados, cheese, and nuts to name a few. High-fat food can bring about heartburn. High-fat foods can cause acid reflux in one of two ways. The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle that is like a barrier between the esophagus and your stomach. If the muscle starts to relax, stomach acid may back up into the esophagus from your stomach and bring on heartburn. High-fat foods can relax the sphincter and cause acid reflux.

The second way in which these high-fat foods can cause acid reflux is by releasing the hormone, Cholecystokinin (CCK) into your body. This hormone can relax the esophagus and cause acid reflux. Eat foods high in fat sparingly or not at all, if possible, especially fried foods.
