Coffee contains the most widely consumed stimulant, caffeine. In general, stimulants increase anxiety which can trigger mania in bipolar patients. Caffeine, in particular disrupts sleep and causes lethargy and irritability. These in turn lead to mood swings and bipolar episodes. Additionally, caffeine is found to be incompatible to antipsychotic drugs thereby adding to another reason to avoid caffeine.
Tip: Go for decaffeined coffees and teas to enjoy its aromas yet not affected by its stimulating effects.
